Although never crowned Emperor by the Pope, Richard, Earl of Cornwall, was crowned King of the Romans at Aachen, and was practically Emperor1 of Germany from his coronation in 1257 to his death in 1271. Called away by troubles in England, he still was able at times per- sonally to look after the affairs of Germany.
